I'm so eager for the new year to begin!
ReplyDeleteFor January I want to focus a bit more on my garden while I have the time and (hopefully!) the energy. I'd like to expand my edible garden further and keep up with using and preserving the veggies and herbs I've already been growing.
For January I plan to use less paper towels. I'm going to focus on using rags and maybe even get around to sewing some unpaper towels.

For january I'm going to use more homemade cleaners. I already use vinegar and water for windows and countertops. I'm going to incorporate baking soda and start using it in the bathroom, and everywhere else possible!

For January, I'm switching to cloth menstrual pads! spirityoga@live.com
ReplyDeleteI wrote a blog post about my change here: http://crystalchild.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/one-small-change-cloth-menstrual-pads/
ReplyDeleteFor January, I'm going to use reusable produce bags at the grocery store. bradntraci@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteFor January I will pack a reusable bag with a reusable travel mug in my vehicle or with me at all times so I do not have to revert to using disposables for shopping or drinking coffee.

For January, our Small Change is to join a food co-op and get back to purchasing staples in bulk. We used to do this, but we moved and have been filling our recycle bin with too much waste from not buying from a co-op.
ReplyDeleteI blogged about how our move from Texas to Missouri negatively impacted all the work we've done through the years at becoming zero-waste.

January will find me giving up store bought laundry detergent and making my own. I've seen rave reviews on the blogs so it's time to try it on my own. Thanks for hosting this fabulous idea again. It was so much fun last year and was really quite easy to make changes.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching One Small Change for a year, I'm jumping in for 2011. My January change is to give up kitchen sponges. I'm knitting some dishrags and scrubbies to replace them.
ReplyDeleteI am going back to using only reusable bags in the store. Extremely high stress legal issues in our life have ruined my meal planning, shopping lists, cooking habits, sleep. I don't see the end yet but I am trying to take it back little by little. First step, keeping bags for groceries and nicer stuff (fabric, books etc.) in my backpack and purse all the time. And dusting off those produce bags as well.
ReplyDeleteFor January I'm going to focus on paper towels. We use many paper towels as napkins. I'm going to eliminate them for my during the day meals and snacks first by using a cloth napkin.
ReplyDeleteMy change is to make some fabric gift bags for next Christmas. I figure if I start now I might actually finish in time!
ReplyDeleteMy change for January is to use homemade food wrap to cover leftovers.
ReplyDeleteOur January change is to use cloth napkins! We only have a few right now so we'll be using washcloths and bandanas until our supply increases.
ReplyDeleteI just wrote a post about my change - an action oriented book club! http://myrainydayhaven.blogspot.com/2011/01/january-2011-one-small-change.html
ReplyDeleteMy change is going to be buying local and humanely raised meat. I don't eat meat but my family does. They don't eat it every day as I don't prepare it very often, but when I do I want to know where and how the meat was raised. I'm going to research meat suppliers at my local co-op and farmer's market.
ReplyDeleteMy January change is to not buy any paper towels at all - we JUST ran out in my household and have been using our cloth rags in the kitchen and at meal time and it's been ok for these few days. I'll need to get ahold of some more kitchen towels but if I don't need to buy paper towels in January I might never need them again!!

For my January change, I'm going to take an online natural wellness class so we no longer have to rely on store-bought remedies.

So many wonderful changes!! My change for Jan is to stop using disposable straws and search out an alternative option. I will blog about it in a few days!

Lights out at sundown one day a week (Friday for us). Candle light only.
ReplyDeleteMy change for this month is to do most my shopping on the outer parts of the grocery store. Getting rid of the processed package food will cut down on waste and get my family eating better.

we loved doing the small changes throughout last year... and I am glad to say we are holding strong and moving forward with more changes.
ReplyDeleteJanuary's change is to bring in more house plants to remove much of the toxins that our indoor air holds.

I'm cutting our shower times to 4 minutes.

One Small Change for January:
ReplyDeleteJanuary brings the challenge to Eat At Home. I did a OAMC day in December to stock my freezer with tons of food for this month. It is now my goal to make sure that I actually EAT said food!
I also posted about my January 2011 change and a sum of the changes I made in 2010. It's really an inspiration to see it all add up!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.serendipitouslife.com/2011/01/changes-we-made-in-2010-to-be-more-eco-friendly/
Our small change for this month is indeed small: to buy only local apples. However, because we can get local apples only at farmers' markets, meeting this goal is going to get us to the markets to find out what other kinds of produce are available locally in NYC at this time of year. The long-term goal is to minimize (eliminate?) our consumption of produce from California, Mexico, and other distant sources.
ReplyDeleteHere's my post on the topic: http://www.thevariegatedlife.com/small-changes-january-2011/.
I do plan to join you in "one small change" this year.
ReplyDeleteLots of great ideas here. In Jan I'm going to get back to using cloth grocery bags. I've really slacked off in that area and we have a bunch of plastic bags again - I'll be taking most to the recycle box at Wmart soon.
I'm also going to be making our garden larger this year and building raised bed boxes for them.
Thanks for the giveaway!

OK here goes... My one small change for January is to find healthy and creative ways to use my leftovers. Kitchen composting was a disaster (maybe I'll try again), but for now I am focusing on reducing the amount of edible food we throw away. I wrote about it in by blog here

Excited to be joining One Small Change for the first time! For January, I will compost everything compostable. WHen garden season ended and the weather got cold, we fell out of that habit and are throwing out things that shouldn't be!
ReplyDeleteOh and I blogged about it here.

Well, first of all, my major change for January will be joining One Small Change! :) I'm really excited about all the changes I can make this year. And my change in the house for January will be to use my consignment money to "buy" Kleen Kanteens for the kids to use and recycle all their plastic sippys and cups.
ReplyDeleteSo glad this is "officially" starting back up again! We are officially making the change over to Seventh Generation laundry detergent. Just bought enough of it to last through 2011!

My change will be to use LESS paper towels! My fam and I will cut half of our use by not using them in the kitchen. I'm almost done blogging about it, but I also am adding some reflection to the post about the non-toxic cleaning concoctions I've made these past few months! Our change has definitely stuck and we've learned a lot so far! Post soon! Thanks for all the inspiration everyone!!!
ReplyDeleteJanuari has me making all of hubbies lunches instead of him grabbing a sarnie from the van. He used to take home made bread but with winter here he needs something warm :)
ReplyDeleteI will be reusing empty mayonaise jars for him to take it all to work.
Our 1 small change this month is to start composting again. Before we moved last year we composted like crazy. But when we moved here we stopped :( We don't have a compost bin so we didn't think we could compost here (I know that sounds silly but our old town did it all for us we just put into bin and once a week they came and took it for us) We just found out that our little village has a compost site that we can take our stuff to when ever we want! So excited, can't wait to see how much less garbage we will have now!!! giggles0401@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteSuzy - have you seen this blog? http://berlinswhimsy.typepad.com/berlins_whimsy/2011/01/reflecting.html
ReplyDeleteShe uses reusable glass drinking straws. Awesome.
Re-purposing the Christmas tree before it lands in the compost bin.
ReplyDeleteBlogged about it here: http://www.wingstoflyblog.com/2011/01/recycling-the-christmas-tree.html
I forgot to comment with my month's change: We've switch to glass containers instead of buying new plastic ones. They are awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd there will be less restaurant this month.
I also have 3 bday gifts to make!
Beter late than never! My small change for January is to start my family's change to a wholefood diet. So eating less processed foods- which are often produced off shore.

I loved the idea left in the comments by "House in the trees" about forgoing electricity after sundown one evening per week, so I'm going to try that. I've picked Tuesday evenings, as a relaxing break to the workweek.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
