January Giveaway: The Peaceful Peacock

We are so excited to be offering you these handmade eco friendly coozies for our very first giveaway of 2011. Julie of The Peaceful Peacock has created 2 custom made coozies specifically for this giveaway and we are thrilled to have partnered with her. She hand makes each of her coozies with creativity, love, and a whole lot of awesomeness. She uses eco friendly materials such as thrift store sweaters and fabric made from recycle plastic bottles. Julie embroidered the words "Be the Change" on the 2 coozies with the green one fitting a bottle or can and the burgundy one made to fit bottles only. Julie custom makes coozies, so if you have something in mind, be sure to contact her to get fitted with your own personalized coozie!

Today we will have 2 lucky winners! To enter, simply leave a comment here and let us know what you January change was. This giveaway is for participants only. We will announce the winner on Monday January 31st. Good luck!

  2. I have to admit that I haven't been so good about commenting on my changes. However, I'm going to really try to keep up on this every month! ;)
In January I've decided to start making all my own cleaning products. I found great recipes courtesy of my sister, the Executive Director at Women's Voices for the Earth, in Missoula, MT. These recipes are simple, easy, smell great, and best of all they are not harmful to the environment or myself. I feel good about cleaning now and I've found I actually do it more often too! ;)
Thank you One Small Change and The Peaceful Peacock for the opportunity to win one of Julie's super awesome coozies!

  3. Those are absolutely beautiful, thank you so much Julie!

I can't believe it's already time for me to start thinking about an end of the month reflection post on January's Small Change. Mine was to focus on my expanding garden.

  4. Her coozies are adorable!!

Our change has been to eat less meats in our meals. They way we have always eaten (even in childhood), there is more meat on the plate than there are healthy veggies. So, we're trying to turn that around and have a small portion of meat to a couple of different vegetables. I'd eventually like to have all veggie meals at least twice a week, but that's going to take a lot of encouraging the husband!!

  7. I already won the eCloth give-away so please don't enter me in this drawing. That said, I was supposed to be making my own laundry detergent, but after finding 2 more bottles in the cellar I just couldn't justify my own until I used up the store bought. But let me tell you about those eClothes...they rock. Dusting? The cloth sucks up dust like a magnet. The cleaning cloths? Yep, those do too. I cleaned the lights in the bathroom and the top of the refrigerator, and with one swipe the dust and grime were gone. They're like....magic. ~grins~ L.O.V.E. them!

  8. I would love to be entered into this giveaway! My changes for January (as I posted yesterday), have been remembering my market bags, using natural laundry detergent, and all around trying to use less chemicals everywhere! And it is going great!! :)

  9. my change to use less paper towels wasn't as much as i thought it would be. I have been really good about sticking with my other changes, but for some reason, the paper towel change was more minimal than maximal (is that a word?) this month. We definitely used cloths more with kitchen wipe-up, but are still using paper towels for bathroom cleanup. So, I'd say I'm halfway there!! Ordered some HMM eco-scrubs--hoping for some inspiration with those!!

  12. I love these! My January change is a cooking makeover. I am spending some purposeful time planning and shopping for budget, health, and reduction of the packaging we bring into our house. It's been fun so far: cooking beans from dried rather than using canned, making vegan sausage, making pecan milk from Christmas gift pecans. Yay!

  13. I started a "battery jar", where we collect all of our used batteries. Then I found a local recycle depot that will recycle them for free. AND I signed Oregon's Ban the Bag Petition.

  14. In January, I used my first mama cloth since my cycle returned after 15 months of nursing! I'll never go back to disposable feminine products!

I also got the cutest stainless steel straws, and some new stainless steel tiffins for my lunch. It makes the whole act of eating lunch much more pleasant and deliberate. Love it!

  15. Eating out less and paying more attention to what I am eating and the impact that the food I eat makes on the earth.

  16. My change for January was to start using mesh produce bags when I go to the grocery store. I had already been reusing the plastic produce bags that you get from the store, but they wear out so quickly. I decided to stop using the plastic (and adding to this world's waste), and bought several small mesh bags. I love the way they look when I get home, filled with fresh fruits and veggies!

  17. I finally convinced my husband to cancel cable television. That will save a lot of electricity being used in our house. We are also changing a lot in our diet to reduce our impact on the environment, such as eating a lot less meat unless raised locally.

  19. I love the coozies..they are so cool. We stopped eating out for the last several months. THAT was a BIG change for us. I'm paying very close attention to what we eat and started a good walking program with a friend.

  20. I neglected to blog but we are doing several things, altho' some are for the future. We are researching solar energy {+ things like hot water on demand units, skylights, etc.} to be used in our next, and much smaller, shophouse in 5 years or so.
As for the now, I've been keeping the thermostat lower & being better about turning off lights I don't need. I'm so bad about that!
Thanks for the op to win one of the lovelies! And thanks Peaceful Peacock!

  21. We did make our change this month, replacing paper towels with cloth napkins for all our meals. I bet I cut our paper towel use by 80-90%.

My husband was also super good about saving the coffee grounds for compost. And, we purchased 4 new plants for the house and second-hand planters to plant them in. Plants are low water use cacti, aloe, and then a mint plant so we can grow a bit of our own herbs.

Next month, we are directing our attention to household cleaners...

  22. In January I gave lots of unused and not needed items from my home to goodwill. I have kept part of the clothing to use in various sewing projects for the future rather than purchasing material.

  23. My change for January is to giveaway all the wonderful things that are laying around here that I will never use. The beautiful necklace I received as a gift but it's not my style. The bath salts that I was given but I only take showers. All those kinds of little things that are laying around being wasted. They are now going to good homes where they will be loved and used.

  24. January marked the first time in a few years that I've approached the garden professionally. This year I'll be growing a significant amount of our food.

  25. My change this year has been learning more about vegetarian cooking. I switched to a vegetarian diet a few months ago, but my food repertoire is limited, and my family is not digging it. I subscribed to Vegetarian Times, and I'm learning slowly but surely. However, I'm easier to please than they are.
